RAINCATCHER KISUMU, KENYA

10 new rainwater harvesting systems were installed in Kisumu, in the western region of Kenya. The 10 locations were schools that did not have enough clean water to drink.

On the day we were visiting the schools in 2013, it was national deworming day where children are given a pill to take with lots of water. One headmistress said to us, “We are grateful for the rainwater tank, especially on this day, so the kids can get clean water to drink with their medicine instead of walking down to the river far away, some children get bit by snakes when they go there.”

Children – and particularly girls – are denied their right to education because their schools lack clean water and sanitation facilities. Women and children are forced to spend large parts of their day fetching water.
